Library Project

Lets discuss the libary project!

Here is the site Colin put up for us with info about the library.

We've given each facet of the project a leader:

  • Chris Walker - Library posters
  • Ogi - Mobile Design
  • Dave Hoffman - 3D blocks
  • Egle - Wallpaper

These people will round up and organize the ideas pertaining to their part of the project.

So we've settled on the formats for our work. The wallpaper and posters have specific dimensions (which I will work on getting for you guys), but the 3D blocks and mobile have more leeway.

Take a look at all the things the library provides that we can promote, share some ideas in the comments, and do some thumbnail sketching.

I just talked to Colin, and he confirmed that the wallpaper size for all the computers is 1024 x 768 pixels. Egle asked what program would be best for this project, so I want to make it clear that you can use anything you're comfortable with. Illustrator, Photoshop, cardboard and sharpies, whatever. As long as you end up with a 1024 x 768px image on the computer.

Colin is really excited about the mobile idea, and he's all in favor of it being big. There are no restrictions on this, the librarians are really jazzed to have our work on display.

I still need to measure the poster sizes, but you know the general dimensions and that shouldn't hold you back from sketching up ideas.

Next week I would like us all to walk down to the library during a meeting and scope out locations for this stuff. How does that sound?

Sounds good to me! I'd like to get in there and take a closer look around. I've been having some creative block lately, but hopefully I can put an end to it soon!

I asked Colin about the mobile size but he wasn't very specific... Which makes things kinda harder.

We're professionals, though, so we won't let that be a problem. Right?:)

I will come up with couple ratios for the mobile and start ideating. I hope we're gonna have some ideas to talk about on Tuesday meeting. See ya!

Can I get down on this wallpaper project with you guys?

Ogi, the mobile is one of those things that just hasn't been done before, so there's a lot of freedom in the dimensions of it. It's definitely more hands-on in the creation process, since it's not really something we can just send to a print shop. Chris was talking about cutting the pieces out of foamcore... I wonder if he still has access to the vinyl cutter. It would be awesome to have foamcore shapes with vinyl type and shapes applied to it.

Kristin, get on board! I think the wallpaper project is perfect for you. In case you missed out, the project is to design computer wallpaper images that correspond to the printer queue color of the computer. So, the red computers go to the red printer, the blue to the blue, and the green to the green. There's a lot of artistic freedom in this one, the idea is to spice up the atmosphere of the computers with really cool imagery and at the same time subliminally alert the user to which color their computer is associated with.

Oh, I most definitely still have access to the vinyl cutter!

so what you're saying is that mobile pieces wouldn't be printed but rather [fine] painted?

That's really up to us. It might be interesting to paint them, but we could also print stuff and attach it to the pieces. OR we could use the vinyl cutter, which I think would be super slick.

ORRRR we could use the vinyl cutter to put stuff on the pillars. Whoah!

Dude....Im totally digging that wallpaper concept. Dope.

Here's a concept for a desktop wallpaper. A brain in a fish bowl with a container of brain food right next to the bowl.

Another idea I had is for a possible poster. I know it seems weird but I was in a creative mood tonight.

Rock out! I'm so glad you're posting pictures. You're right, the head-eating-things idea would really stand out as a poster.

Chris, do you envision an illustrative or photographic theme to the posters?

Why not do a hybrid of Both illustrative and photo work for the posters?

Aaron, that looks good, what if one of those books was a video instead, or maybe adding something to indicate the library covers film?

Here is my idea for the Green desktop for the library. The letters are alittle hard to make out in the branches, but i will fix that up on the comp when I start working on it.

Excellent. I'd kinda like to see it more leafy and flowery. It looks pretty bare right now, and it would be good to get a feeling of growth from it.

Awesome idea with the book growing branches but yeah add some leaves or curve some of the branches I like it a lot and look forward to seeing the end results.

I made a digital concept for the blue computer desktop. Its still in its early stages. Im hoping to maybe try and use an actual fishbowl and take a picture of it and then take a picture of one of those brain models they have at the library. But let me know what you guys think so far. Im actually kinda liking this as just an illustration.Brain in A Fish Bowl by Aaron Babel

I would not endorse using this pic on a poster, however, how about this statement I punched in on the Hancock Jumbotron? That is what I incorporate with libraries, because it rhymes, I can not remember if I had heard this before, but it would make sense if such a rhyme was used, if so, it should be allowed to be used again for libraries in general.

[EDIT: Hotlinked image removed. Please do not hotlink images. You may provide a link to the page on which the image exists. -Dave]

Josh are you reffering to the brain in a fish bowl pic because that's for a computer desktop background not a poster.

Ok, so the image isn't great, drew it in like acouple mins. Just the start of something, need to tighten it up more, but wanted to know what you all think.

It's supposed to be an apple with like book pages turning in it. Was also thinking about putting the library logo on like an apple sticker for produce.

Hope this is ok ^^^^

Congratulations, to the entire team that created that masterpiece for Soulpancake.com . You are making us proud here at COD and AIGA.

Kaz, that's an awesome concept! I can see exactly how we'd pull that off in photoshop, too.

Congratulations guys, the video for soulpancake is kick ass, I look forward to making something as awesome as that for the library, I was away last week but I look forward to seeing you over the week.

Ok, here's the deal for the poster sizes.

The posters are about 27in wide by 40in tall. Make your document a little bigger for bleed (so work at 29in by 42in) and make sure you leave a 1 inch margin inside the work area just in case. Make sure your document is at least 150 dpi (probably no more than 300 dpi, even that is going to give you a huge file if you're working in photoshop).

...and a side note to the people congratulating the Soul Pancake group, it would probably be best to write your messages in the soul pancake project forum topic.

I've got the number of posters in the classroom. It's 10 posters total, with 5 on each side. So I'm thinking we do Type, Illustration, Type, Illustration, Type. That means we need six typographic posters and four illustrative posters.

I can't find my notes, but I think the topics we decided to cover were databases, laptops, mobile support (IM, text, email), research guides, anatomy models, and scanning.
